TEACHING ASSIGNMENTS & RESPONSIBILITIES

Teaching AssistantMicrobiology 409: Microbial Genetics (UBC Vancouver) January-April 2009

- Responsibilities will include assisting in curriculum, course goal, and learning objective evaluation; designing active learning strategies to be applied in the classroom; preparing and implementing weekly tutorial sessions for ~150 students; design of assessment and evaluation strategies for the course; marking of assignments, tests and final papers.

Instructor and course designerScience Creative Literacy Symposium (Microbes in the Environment) (UBC Vancouver) December 1-5, 2009 

- Responsible for design and implementation of a 4 hour field trip for grade 6 and 7 students to practice science in a real lab and learn about microbes in the environment, as well as learn to write creatively about science.  Students observed and described environmental microbes under the microscope, then designed their “ideal microbes” and wrote rengas (a Japanese form of poetry) about their microbes.  Finally, students shared their work in a poetry reading for the class.

- My co-instructor and I were also responsible for developing our field trip curriculum into a teaching resource to be made available online for elementary school teachers to use in their classrooms if they can’t make it for the field trip.

Teaching AssistantEnvironmental Science 200: Introduction to Environmental Science (SFU, Burnaby) September-December 2005

- Teaching assistant for EVSC 200, a class focusing on environmental issues facing Canada today including: climate change and its impact on Arctic wildlife and British Columbian ecosystems, sustainable aquaculture and fisheries, history of the environmental movement in North America and the world, history of environmental epidemiology, experimental design, statistics and data interpretation.

- Fully responsible for preparing and executing weekly tutorial lessons for ~70 students, marking tests, assignments and final papers.

Instructor and course designerOrganic Chemistry 282 Review Sessions (SFU, Burnaby) December 2006 

- Created an end-of-term review session for Organic Chemistry 282, and delivered this session to ~40 students.

Workshop designer and presenterStudent Learning Conference 2008: Activation Energy! (UBC Vancouver) January 12, 2008 

- The Student Leadership Conference is UBC’s largest student-run conference, providing over 1200 delegates with the opportunity to develop their leadership skills through engaging workshops and speakers. 

- In 2008, my partner and I were responsible for creating and presenting a leadership workshop we titled:Extraordinary Leadership, Powerful Lives: Integrity, Discovery, Creation.  

MentorUBC Tri-Mentoring Program (UBC Vancouver), November 2007-March 2008

- Responsible for mentoring a 4th year undergraduate student from the Department of Microbiology for 5 months.  We met once monthly and discussed the student’s experiences and progress at UBC, ideas and direction for the future, and general questions and concerns about moving on to graduate school.
